The Next Generation of Teachers Start to Use The Earth Charter

With their slogan “Creating a new generations of teachers”, Sampoerna School of Education (SSE) offers future teacher candidates unique opportunities to be qualified teacher with extended education, practical works and research.

One of the courses that run on this semester is Environmental Education. “It’s important to discuss environmental issue with students at SSE, because these students are soon to become educators,” said Mrs. Stien Matakupan, the lecture for Environmental Education course at SSE. In addition to nurture students to become environmental educators, this course aims to encourage students to be able to analyze the problems of the world from the point of economic, social and environmental as well as perform activities to address the current challenges on the earth.

Realizing this opportunity, she would like to bring the Earth Charter up as a topic on her public lecture session. To make this happened, she gave me the opportunity to organize and facilitate the Earth Charter Workshop for her students. Mrs. Matakupan is also part of Earth Charter Initiatives in Indonesia, she also had the honorable opprtunity to attend EC+10 event in India, November 2010.

The Earth Charter Workshop held on January 7, 2012 with more than 25 participants (include 2 participants from Teens Go Green). The workshop aimed to:
  1. Promote the Earth Charter so the students can understand about its vision and how Indonesia's role in the Earth Charter history.
  2. Identify the relationship between green teacher project activities undertaken by the students based on vision of the Earth Charter.
  3. Promote about Earth Charter Initiatives in Indonesia and encourage them to take action inspired by the Earth Charter
The workshop was opened with the question, “what are the current challenges to life on earth?” Starting from pollution, waste, population growth, poverty, environmental degradation, climate change, until traffic jam problem in Jakarta. The discussion then moved into the different concept between conventional developmet and sustainable development. The Earth Charter was born to help promote the sustainable development. It's needed ‘to promote the transition to sustainable ways of living and a global society founded on a shared ethical framework' as mentioned in mission of the Earth Charter Initiatives.

Having introduced to the four of main principles of The Earth Charter, participants then were grouped into 10 based on the Green Teacher Project team that formed prior to the workshop.

By the key question, "what are your activities/projects that reflect to each EC main principles?" participants were asked to discuss and write it down onto flipchart paper. Following the working group session, the open space session then provided participants with the opportunity to read others’ papers, ask questions, and comment.

Personally, I have been amazed by their activities either the existing projects or their projects plan. Some of their activities are Green Teacher Project, Coral Reef and Tree Planting, Recycling Project, Mangrove Project, Healthy Food Campaign, Anti-Styrofoam Campaign, until Reflection on Students Attitudes based on the Earth Charter values. Although they were confused at first, the session was going well as participants finally found the linkage among the Earth Charter principles.

The next topic was more about Earth Charter Youth Network and Earth Charter activities in Indonesia. I introduced Earth Charter Iniatives and there is a youth network that involves active young people from over 100 countries within this initiative, include Indonesia. Earth Charter activities in Indonesia mostly run by volunteers and Earth Charter Youth Group. The activity that happening now is Indonesia Rio+20 Global Youth Music Contest organized by young volunteers from all over the Indonesia.

Furthermore, I also brought up my own story and experience with the Earth Charter. It’s how and why I’m involved with the Earth Charter, how the Earth Charter inspires me, and how I initiated the first ECYG in Indonesia.

At the end, participants gave their testimony about their experience on this workshop and their hope about Earth Charter.

By the end of January, the participants will organize an exhibition to show off their projects.

Earth Charter could be the basic reference if we'd like to apply the values in our life. SSE Green Teacher is a new organization, so the member

INCREDIBLE! Very inspiring! It´s much better to learn Earth Charter directly from the speaker. Actually, I am interested in Putri´s experiences on working with Earth Charter with many young fellows from
all over the world. Hopefully in the future, environmental youth organizations will be growth and developed rapidly!

Interesting. Inspiring. Fun. Meaningful. Hopefully the Earth Charter Youth will
be improved more and more and succeed as well. Honestly, I was inspired to do many environmental activities with my friends and with Junior and High School students. I am also interested in being more committed to protecting the earth.

A Testimony of Love. Sebuah Kesaksian Cinta. Un Testimonio de Amor.

My lovely friends, Richard and Rama (or they always shorten their names as RiRa), are currently appealing a visa decision for Rama to settle with Richard in the UK. As part of the process there will be a tribunal hearing on Feb 14th, 2012.

I was asked to state any evidence I have in support of the authenticity of their relationship, to be presented in court. This statement below was originally from my handwriting. I post it here just to documenting and it's dedicated to them..

Here is my statement..

--

I met Rama and Richard for the first time in 2008 when we were on trip together to Halimun National Park, Bogor for vacation. I knew them as friends of my friend, Sarie Wahyuni. At that time I didn't know more about their relationship and I just saw Richard as Rama's friend who travelling to Indonesia :D

After the Halimun trip, we met again at a dinner to give Richard small farewell party because he's going to leave Indonesia. We also gave him a small gift -- Mini Angklung, Indonesian traditional music instrument made from Bamboo. He was so happy for it as he started trying to play it. He played 'Happy Birthday' song since our friend at the same time had her birthday. I was so surprised because it didn't take much time for him to play Angklung (I have to admit that I can't play Angklung well, I really envy him). At that time, I recognized Richard as a nice and friendly person. I'm type of person who difficult to see someone's character at the first impression. And about Rama, I still didn't know her well though at that time we had met twice. In addition, I still couldn't read what's going on between Richard and Rama until I saw them holding hands each other as leaving the place we had dinner together. I didn't know why I was feeling something different when I saw them behaving like that. Not merely to guide Rama as they crossing the street, I could feel the sincerity on their holding hands, smiles, eye contact to each other, and I just realized that they're falling in love.

Months later (2009), I met Rama once again on our trip to Rambut Island since we have common activities on being volunteer in a community in Jakarta. We talked a lot and that's the time I felt that we're getting closer and again I just realized that she's so friendly and fun person to hang out with. Since then, we sometimes do some activities together.

One day (April, 2011), when I organized an event at an ecopark in Jakarta, I heard that Rama would come, not alone, she would come with Richard. Wow, I was so surprised of Richard's coming. UK - Indonesia is too far away and also costly. I believe that no one would come this far if he/she doesn't have a good reason for it (at that time, I was only thinking that he might be rich enough for this). After the event, we went to have lunch together and we decided to plan on having picnic together at Botanical Park, Bogor.

At picnic, they told me that they're gonna be married this year. OMG, so this is that good reason!! a great news tooo. I was soo happy to hear that. The two faraway-apart hearts would become one soon. Their love and relationship are really in dead earnest. It really touched my heart.

And in June 2011, they finally married. I came to their happy-holy-ever marriage ceremony with other friends who also Rama-Richard's best friends. I was also introduced to Richard's parents and uncle. I came with thousand of happiness and lovely wishes for their life and love story.  The ceremony was going so humble before God and loves. I almost cried during the ceremony 'cause I wish I would be on their position soon.

Dear Honorable Court,
Rama and Richard's love story is very beautiful. Getting the news that they can't live together after married sounds like thunder to me, so sad, and it hurts. I'm convinced that they will be struggling for their love because we all know that being apart from our beloved one is very unpleasant.

They are my best and beloved friends. I will always support and pray for their happiness and peaceful life. That's the reason why I write this letter and give my witness of the authenticity of their relationship.

Sincerely,

Chest Pain. Nyeri Dada. El Dolor De Pecho.

HATI-HATI, JANGAN SEPELEKAN NYERI DADA

Menurut data US Center For Disease Control (CDC) di Amerika ± 250.000 orang meninggal akibat serangan jantung setiap tahun.

Kemudian, tambahnya, nyeri dada akibat penyakit jantung.
